Programs to play MIDI files—

The MIDI files can be played on your computer system by music player software like Windows Media Player and Real Player.  However, more control of the music can be achieved with programs like MuseScore, Anvil Studio and Finale Notepad.  All of these programs allow you to view the score (the free version of Anvil Studio only lets you see one track at a time, however) and to limit what parts play.  You can also compose your own scores for practice.  Some of the versions referenced below are limited in some way because they are free or demo versions that are designed to get you to buy more advanced versions, but they are all quite usable.

bulletMuseScore (FREE; Windows, MacOS and Linux):  <---Very versatile program and constantly improving!
bulletAnvil Studio FREE version (Windows only):  <---Not as versatile as MuseScore unless you pay for add-ons.
bulletFinale Notepad (FREE; Windows and MacOS):  <---Versatile program and precursor to Finale.
bulletNotes and Links for playing MIDI files on John's MIDI Choral Music:  A lot of good information on playing MIDI files and many links to MIDI players.  Choose “3. Playing MIDI Files” to get more information than you ever thought you needed to know!
bulletNeed the MIDI files with only your part playing?  E-mail Help Desk with precisely what you want and we will try to accommodate you.
